Business Class: I have a gut feeling

I was having a lesson with Mr.M today and the Italian expression ” a pelle” (i.e. on my skin) came up.

We agreed that a possible English expression could be ” to have a gut feeling“.  A gut is your stomach or belly.

It means that your feeling is instinctive with no proof to support the opinion.

English: belly button

English: belly button (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Here are a few examples in context:

  • I have a gut feeling about that guy. I don’t trust him.
  • She has a gut feeling about accepting that proposal.

Have you ever heard this expression before?  Can you come up with a better translation?
