We asked Crisitna(Italian accent) to tell us about her recent family vacation to Istanbul. She listed her top sites. She remarked about the location of her hotel & she shared her kids’ reaction to this fabulous city.

Ask Task: An Equestrian In The Family

We asked Martine to talk to us about horses & riding. She recently bought a horse. She explained what criteria she followed when purchasing it. She also told us about the pros & cons of having a child that rides.

Play the interview and try to listen for the following expressions:

  • Height: the measurement of how tall a person or thing is
  • Outgrown: grown too large for
  • Show Jumping: the sport of riding a horse over a set of fences
  • First and Foremost: at the most basic level
  • Moving on: to proceed in a specific way

  • Stables: a building in which horses are kept
  • Obviously: in a way that is easy to understand, see or recognize
  • Fees : amounts of money that must be paid

We asked Annette (Scottish accent) to talk to us about her WordPress blog called Tiny Texts. She describes what a Tiny Text is. She explains why they are so short and she shares the motivation behind creating them.

  • Headlines – the title written in large letters over a story in the newspaper
  • And so on – continuing in the same way

Did you notice that Annette uses the word “Well” right before she answers a question. It doesn’t really have a meaning when used like this. It’s a kind of interjection or filler (intercalare in Italian). She uses it to pause, catch her breath or think of what she has to say next.  Is it correct to use it if it doesn’t really have any meaning? Well, of course it is!
