Thanks vs Tanks

I read many learner emails & I sometimes come across ‘Tanks!’ as a sign off.

I often wonder whether it is a genuine typo (i.e. oops…I typed it wrong) or a true blue spelling mistake (i.e. omg…is thank you written with a ‘H’?)

This video should help if the latter is the case!

Typos can be avoided by using your spell check.

Happy Day to You!

Encouragement Does More Than Correction

Slide1

As a parent, I am often faced with my boys who might not listen or situations in which they can act inappropriately . So, it got me thinking about whether always correcting them was better than just letting certain things go. Could simply encouraging them to do better next time be more productive  than always  highlighting the mistake? Does this hold true in an office setting as well?

What is the definition of encouragement?

Something that makes someone more determined, hopeful, or confident

How do you pronounce it?

en·cour·age·ment /ɪnˈkɚrɪʤmənt/

Can you answer the following questions in conversation with your trainer or a friend ?

  • What do you do to encourage yourself when going through hard times? Does it work?
  • Who do you talk to for encouragement and inspiration?
  • Which of your family members encourage you most? How?
  • What are some saying in your country that bring encouragement?
  • What’s the most encouraging book you’ve ever read?
  • Which is better a word of encouragement or a letter of encouragement? Why?
  • Should people just accept whatever comes there way?
  • What are some ways you feel you can make a difference in this world.
  • What song encourages you most?
  • What person has inspired you the most? How?
  • How can you make yourself believe more in yourself?

Can you write out the answer to the first and last question?

It might be difficult to give this answer. Think about it for a while. Write as many possible options as possible & remember them when you need a little pat on the back!

Introductions Don Jon Style

I watched Don Jon over the holidays.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a guy from Jersey who is addicted to porn and discovers true love in the most unexpected person. I was expecting it to be more commercial but I found it edgy and real. I could have done without the boob comment at the end of this scene where he brings his girlfriend, played by Scarlett Johansson, home for the first time but I guess it is part of what a father & son relationship can be like.

I picked this clip because it is a classic introduction dialogue. Enjoy!

What are they saying in the clip?

Son: Dad, I’d like you to meet Barbara. Barbara, This is my Dad.
Girlfriend: Hi, Mr. Martello.
Dad: Good to meet you…jeez…
Mom: John!!!!
Dad: I wasn’t expecting such a lovely lady. That’s all.
Girlfriend: Thank you. So nice to finally meet you both.
Dad: My pleasure. My pleasure.
Mom: Well, please sit down and I will be right back.
Girlfriend: Can I help you with anything at all?
Mom: Oh! Oh! Oh! I love her already.

Happy New Year!

“Some people swear there is no beauty left in the world, no magic. Then how do you explain the entire world coming together on one night to celebrate the HOPE of a NEW year?”

Let’s kiss last year goodbye along with all regrets, remorse and resentment. Let’s thank it for every moment, every experience, for our friends, our loved ones, our joys, for us surviving our mistakes and our losses… and send it on its way, as we pat ourselves on the back for getting to where we are now.

Let’s not burden ourselves with New Year’s resolutions, so that we are free to embrace new joys, new ideas, new challenges, new solutions, new adventures and surprises as we welcome the new year with open arms because, as they say:

“”Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, Today is a Gift. That’s why it’s called the Present.”

So as we prepare for the New Year, let’s throw away the list of things we’ll force ourselves to do in 2014, let’s just be ready to unwrap 31 million presents with the same excitement and gratitude we feel at Christmas.

FYI, There are 31,536,000 seconds in a year

What can we learn from this post?

  • to swear- to make a solemn declaration
  • to kiss something goodbye – accept the end of something
  • regret- a sense of loss, disappointment, dissatisfaction
  • remorse- a feeling of responsibility for doing wrong
  • pat on the back- to praise someone for something
  • to burden – to place a weight on someone, to make sad
  • to embrace – to receive or accept gladly, to put one’s arms around someone
  • to throw away – to get rid of something useless or unwanted
  • to unwrap – to uncover, to open a present

May 2014 Rock for you!
