Encouragement Does More Than Correction

Slide1

As a parent, I am often faced with my boys who might not listen or situations in which they can act inappropriately . So, it got me thinking about whether always correcting them was better than just letting certain things go. Could simply encouraging them to do better next time be more productive  than always  highlighting the mistake? Does this hold true in an office setting as well?

What is the definition of encouragement?

Something that makes someone more determined, hopeful, or confident

How do you pronounce it?

en·cour·age·ment /ɪnˈkɚrɪʤmənt/

Can you answer the following questions in conversation with your trainer or a friend ?

  • What do you do to encourage yourself when going through hard times? Does it work?
  • Who do you talk to for encouragement and inspiration?
  • Which of your family members encourage you most? How?
  • What are some saying in your country that bring encouragement?
  • What’s the most encouraging book you’ve ever read?
  • Which is better a word of encouragement or a letter of encouragement? Why?
  • Should people just accept whatever comes there way?
  • What are some ways you feel you can make a difference in this world.
  • What song encourages you most?
  • What person has inspired you the most? How?
  • How can you make yourself believe more in yourself?

Can you write out the answer to the first and last question?

It might be difficult to give this answer. Think about it for a while. Write as many possible options as possible & remember them when you need a little pat on the back!

I Hope My Son Is Happy

My son, Giako, came home this week singing “Because I’m happy, clap la-la-la-la….” .

He explained that his second grade class was learning the hook (i.e. chorus) to Pharrel William’s song this week.

I bumped into his English teacher, Matilde, on thursday and we agreed that I would create this video clip for the class to help them memorize the song.

Try singing along with your kids.

I hope it makes you Happy:-)

Introductions Don Jon Style

I watched Don Jon over the holidays.  Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a guy from Jersey who is addicted to porn and discovers true love in the most unexpected person. I was expecting it to be more commercial but I found it edgy and real. I could have done without the boob comment at the end of this scene where he brings his girlfriend, played by Scarlett Johansson, home for the first time but I guess it is part of what a father & son relationship can be like.

I picked this clip because it is a classic introduction dialogue. Enjoy!

What are they saying in the clip?

Son: Dad, I’d like you to meet Barbara. Barbara, This is my Dad.
Girlfriend: Hi, Mr. Martello.
Dad: Good to meet you…jeez…
Mom: John!!!!
Dad: I wasn’t expecting such a lovely lady. That’s all.
Girlfriend: Thank you. So nice to finally meet you both.
Dad: My pleasure. My pleasure.
Mom: Well, please sit down and I will be right back.
Girlfriend: Can I help you with anything at all?
Mom: Oh! Oh! Oh! I love her already.

You can share this post if the clip made you smile & like it if you’ve lived this situation before.

Merry Christmas to All!

A reunion that will touch your heart!

“Twas the Night Before Christmas”

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
A miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
A little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
And more rapid than eagles his reindeer all came,
As he shouted out “Dasher” and each reindeer’s name
So up to the house-top the reindeer all flew,
With the sleigh full of toys — and St. Nicholas too.
Down the chimney he came with a leap and a pound,
He was dressed all in fur and his belly was round,
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight —
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Who wrote ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”?

A Visit from St. Nicholas“, also known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” from its first line, was first published anonymously in 1823 and later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who acknowledged authorship.

This poem has been called ” the best-known verses ever written by an American”,[] and is largely responsible for some of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the mid-nineteenth century to today. It has been set to music and recorded by many artists. (Source: wikipedia.org)

What vocabulary can we learn from this text?

  • stirring : moving
  • stockings: item of clothing for the foot and leg, traditionally filled with gifts at Christmas
  • chimney: fireplace
  • Saint Nicholas: Santa Claus
  • sleigh:  an open vehicle that used over snow or ice
  • reindeer: a large type of deer living in the north of the globe
  • leap: to jump or move quickly
  • belly: the part of the body that contains the stomach
  • fur:  the hairy coat of an animal used to make or line clothes
  • jerk: a quick twist or pull
  • nod: to move your head to say yes,  as a signal to someone or as a way of saying hello or goodbye to someone

To all of those who celebrate this holiday, we wish you a very Merry Christmas!

Video Watch ‘One Republic-Counting Stars’

My friend Taline posted this video on her facebook page. I thought we could listen, read and check out some new vocabulary. I love the tune. Catchy chorus, don’t you think?

What are the lyrics?

Lately I been, I been losing sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin’ hard
Said no more counting dollars
We’ll be counting stars
Yeah, we’ll be counting stars

[Verse 1]
I see this life
Like a swinging vine
Swing my heart across the line
In my face is flashing signs
Seek it out and ye shall find

Old, but I’m not that old
Young, but I’m not that bold
And I don’t think the world is sold
I’m just doing what we’re told

I feel something so right
By doing the wrong thing
And I feel something so wrong
By doing the right thing
I could lie, could lie, could lie
Everything that kills me makes me feel alive

[Chorus]
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin’ hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We’ll be counting stars
Lately I been, I been losing sleep (hey!)
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby, I been, I been prayin’ hard (hey!)
Said no more counting dollars
We’ll be, we’ll be counting stars

[Verse 2]
I feel the love
And I feel it burn
Down this river every turn
Hope is a four letter word
Make that money
Watch it burn

Old, but I’m not that old
Young, but I’m not that bold
And I don’t think the world is sold
I’m just doing what we’re told

And I feel something so wrong
By doing the right thing
I could lie, could lie, could lie
Everything that downs me makes me wanna fly

[Chorus]

[Bridge 4x:]
Take that money
Watch it burn
Sink in the river
The lessons I learned

Everything that kills me makes me feel alive

[Chorus]

[Bridge 4x:]
Take that money
Watch it burn
Sink in the river
The lessons I learned

What do the lyrics mean according to me?
  • He seems to have some kind of addiction and it is stopping him from reaching his goals.
  • He is losing sleep because he is torn between not being able to reach his goal and not being able to keep his promises to his loved on.
  • He is praying hard (i.e. a lot) because he feels desperate. A small feeling of hope surfaces when he says that he will be counting stars in the future.
  • Seek it out and you shall find‘ means look for the way out and you will find it. He does not think that it’s that easy though.
  • Hope is a four letter word , make that money, watch it burn’ shows that they feel they are hoping in vain.
  • He says that he is not bold (i.e. audacious, strong) and this is an excuse for his addiction.

What do you think?

  1. Do you like One Republic? What bands do you listen to?
  2. Do you think being bold is a positive character trait in your country?
  3. When do you  lose sleep over situations?

The internet has been inundated with posts on Nelson Mandela’s passing. I especially liked Seth Godin’s  so I have decided to share it with you. You can find the original link here.

What did Seth Godin have to say?

A Legacy of Mandela by Seth Godin

Others can better write about Nelson Mandela’s impact on the world stage, on how he stood up for the dignity of all people and on how he changed our world.

For those that seek to make a change in the world, whether global or local, one lesson of his life is this:

You can.

You can make a difference.

You can stand up to insurmountable forces.

You can put up with far more than you think you can.

Your lever is far longer than you imagine it is, if you choose to use it.

If you don’t require the journey to be easy or comfortable or safe, you can change the world.

What do the following expressions mean?

  • A legacy: something received form someone who has died
  • To seek : to look for, search
  • To stand up to: refuse to receive bad treatment from someone
  • To put up with: to tolerate

How would you answer the following questions?

  1. How would you describe Nelson Mandela’s accomplishments to children?
  2. Who else has had such a positive impact on Humanity?
  3. What other humanitarian causes need to be adressed today?
  4. When thinking of your community, what can you do to make a change?

Are they mere table stakes?

Lovemarks

Lovemarks (Photo credit: Bart Claeys)

TABLE STAKES!

This is another expression I came across last week at the WOBI. Kevin Roberts from Saatchi & Saatchi used it when speaking of Lovemarks(+/+).

Where does ‘table stakes’ come from?

Well, it is a gambling term, referring to how much a person can bet in a round of poker.

How do we use it in business?

In business, it  usually refers to a minimum level of investment, technology, or some other essential ingredient to make something become successful. It is the minimum requirement to have a credible competitive starting position in any business venture.

How would you translate it in italian?

In poker, I would say ‘scommessa mnima’. In business, it is definitely ‘fattore indispensabile’.

How do we use it in context?

  • Giving great value is table stakes for any lovemark.
  • Social business strategies are becoming table stakes today.

What’s a lovemark?
